Beren, a warder at Caldew Keep, swore an oath to defend her lord and lady.  The arrival of the Watrani horde, allied with the Gitane Witches, changes the world she has known.

The Gitane Witches are sorcerers who have been exiled from Sansward for generations. They were banished after they were defeated in the Great War. What brings them to Caldew Keep, so far from the border with Watran?

Rumors say the Witches are searching for a talisman, lost years upon years ago, when the Witches were exiled.

Then the lady of Caldew Keep reveals that Caldew has hidden the Eye for generations. Lady Treasache orders Beren to protect the Eye, a magical crystal that increases a wielder’s power.

This talisman, the Eye ~ this is the reason the Witches have come so far into Sansward.

The Eye can magnify power ~ and that’s the obvious reason the Witches want its restoration to them.

Yet the Eye can do more. It can free sorcerers trapped in stone, and many of the more dangerous witches were imprisoned in rock rather than exiled. Their return will leave the Sansward allies with no defense against the Gitane.

Yet the Eye has one more benefit. It can remove curses.

At the end of the Great War, the formidable fighting warriors of Prica were transformed through sorcery into wolves that turned on their allies, the army of Sansward. Should the Prica resume their manhood, they will want a terrible vengeance on the Gitane Witches who imprisoned them. Time has reduced their number … even as it intensified their hate for the witches. 

Lady Treasache intends to steal away with the Eye in a desperate bid to keep it from the Gitane.  The Prica Storr thinks to use the Eye to shift back into man.

Will Beren sacrifice herself in a futile attempt to guard the Eye?  With only a sword as defense against sorcery, can she survive a battle against the Gitane Witches?  Or will she discover that the road to death is littered with people who chose honor over life?
